The bibliography first below listed is 'craft'
oriented and meant only as a 'starter kit' for those interested in the professional art
and practice of scoring for film. Far more generic and exhaustive listings of film music
references can be found
elsewhere. Other Film and General Music Web Sites, Newsgroups as well as various Web Search Tools are also cited and 'linked' further down this
page to aid in a quest for additional reference material.
The validity of each of these links is not checked
regularly. If you find that any of these sites have 'gone out of business' or have changed
URL's (Universal Resource Locators, i.e., addresses), please advise Richard:
webmaster@auricle.com
The sites marked with
appear to these Web Page authors to present and/or offer material which may be in
contravention of United States Copyright Laws and Treaties. Hence, the
'd links below-listed are only identified but not 'hot'!
If you wish to review these sites anyway, you may encounter their URL's at other sites as
you browse the Web for music related material.

FILMUS-L
Information Page and Subscription Form
A listservs (list service, also sometimes known as an e-conference or mail
reflector) dedicated to the art and craft of film music. You subscribe to the service
and become a mailing list constituent. Each time you or another subscriber send e-mail to
the service, it is cloned and routed to all other subscribers. Each such listservs
on the net (and there are thousands of them) restricts itself to a certain subject matter.
Thus, in a way, a list service is much like a given "forum" or "news
group" - discussions and the sharing of thoughts within the defined subject matter -
but handled via your normal e-mail services. One of the benefits of listservs is
that they usually maintain archives which can be searched according to your interest. Recommendation:
If you subscribe, be sure to select the daily "digest" option otherwise
your mail box is likely to get cluttered with a lot of individual e-mail messages.
The Hans Zimmer Worship Page
This is a fan-created site. Hans assured me personally that he has nothing
to do with it!
The Society of Composers and
Lyricists
The Herbie Hancock
Homepage A pure vanity site with not much substance... yet.
The Lee Holdridge
Homepage
One of the more prolific and respected film composers in the biz (e.g., EMMY 1995 for the
mini-series Buffalo Girls), Lee has been an Auricle owner-devotee for years (see Credits ). Lee's site, put together with the help of his
son, provides much info about his career, works in progress and his contribution to the
art and craft of film music.
The Hollywood Creative
Directories Web Site
The publisher of a number of "Film and Television Industry Bibles" -
compilations of human and material resources available in and to the entertainment
industry, including the Hollywood Movie Music Directory which lists composers,
songwriters and music supervisors.
Mark Isahm's Homepage
Mark, this "websitemaster" and The Auricle first met at the recording of his
score for A River Runs Through It (see Credits
). And The Auricle has been at every one of his film scoring sessions since. But, as a
view of his site will establish, Mark's metier, apart from film, encompasses jazz
composition and solo and ensemble live performance artistry as well.
Society for the
Preservation of Film Music
Indiana
University Music Web Site List
Maintained by the University of Indiana Music Library, this site compiles an exhaustive
list of links to academic, individual and commercial sites on the Web having anything to
do with music.
The Internet Music Monolith
One of the prettier sites around, this page is dedicated to music but with an emphasis on
Australian content.
Electronic
Music Software Price Guide
A comprehensive list of music software and suppliers at the best prices available.
Marc
Anthony's Musical Score Home Page
A site dedicated to its author's deep interest in film music. Contains a number of links
to other sites relevant to the art, craft and appreciation of film music, and includes a
list of movies in production (i.e., 'Coming Attractions') and the composers slotted to score them.
The Midi Farm
A Site of Sites - a place on the Web where others have home pages, provided that the
subject matter has something to do with MIDI/Computer Music. Also contains links to other
sites of relevance in the same field.
MIDIMAN
A manufacturer of various MIDI paraphernalia for both Mac and IBM based system. We have
been talking to Tim Ryan, President of MIDIMAN about the manufacture of a PCMCIA
V24-like midi-card to permit the Auricle to run fully on notebooks. He is interested in
proceeding, but says he is (1) waiting for the PCMCIA standard to 'stabilize'; and (2),
pondering the worthwhileness of the market beyond film composition. If you have a chance,
write Tim a message and vote that he proceed. Address your message to 'Dear Tim:' at
midiman@midifarm.com.
Mission
Recording and Audio
A Web based retailer of MIDI and synth gear (they take credit cards over the net!). This
site also provides a page containing many
links to other music related
sites on the World Wide Web.
Music
Machines is ...
"...devoted to information about music-making machines: synthesizers, drum machines,
effects, and so on. We lean toward true synthesists' electronic tools rather than acoustic
instruments or preset sound boxes. Here you'll find images, descriptions, reviews,
schematics, do-it-yourself tips, pricelists, and general discussions about using
electronic musical equipment."
The Music Web
is...
..not just another technogear compendium, but also catalogs links and jumps to sites
concentrating on theory and technique, analog instruments and instrumentation,
composition, and so forth.and so on.
The Sibelius
Academy is...
...the only music university in Finland. Its Website is well laid out and contains a trove
of links to hundreds of music related sites... with, not surprisingly, a European flavor.
Refreshingly, sites having to do with composition, technique, theory, and so forth,
predominate, unlike other sites whose links favor electronic music toys and gadgets.
The SYNTH ZONE
A compilation of links concentrating on synth gear sites but with many other references to
interesting general music related locales around the world.
The Vangeles Page
Another fan-created site where its anonymous author specifically disclaims any
knowledge or participation of the composer or his assigns.

MIDI and Music Vendor Page
An omnibus of links to sites dealing with, describing and/or offering electronic and other
music gear and paraphernalia.
Caution:
Not all browsers are capable of spawning a news session.
rec.music.movies
(unmoderated discussions, mostly by fans, of the film music art form and those interested
in soundtracks generally - for you pros, you might want to take a look periodically to get
some feedback about your work... but don't post and ID yourself or you might get
"stalked" e-mailwise!).
comp.music ('computer
music' - the discussions here are mostly "gear-head" or "synth toy"
oriented... "wanna buys, and sells", "how do I use", etc. ...
occasionally a gem if you're willing to wade through the noise).
rec.music.makers.synth
(again, mostly "gear-head" or "synth toy" oriented... see also comp.music,
above).
rec.music.compose
(occasionally, but not often, there is some discussion here of film music; mostly,
though, this group focuses on serious, sometimes the academic aspects of music composition
- theory, style, technique, methods, etc. - leaving, most of the time, most of the
electronic gadget chatter to the other News Groups).
ALIWEB at Nexor (one
of our favorites)
ALIWEB at
Indiana University (use if ALIWEB at Nexor is too busy).
Alta Vista
Search Engine (
this one searches News Groups too!)
Infoseek
The Internet Registry
(a kind of Worldwide White Pages for e-mail addresses on
the Net... look for someone here and be sure to register so you can
be found).
Lycos (maintained by
Carnegie Melon University - another favorite of ours)
McKinley Web Directory
Spry Mosaic's
WebWiz (also collects/offers many other Web Search Tools).
Webcrawler (this one is now
owned by AOL)
